Perfect Timing Friday Five!!!!

I could just kiss Singing Owl for giving this timely Friday Five!:

We will be at a chaplain's convention when you all are answering the Friday Five Questions. I'll look forward to reading your answers next week when I get home. At the moment we are trying to get the car loaded so we can hit the road, so this will be a simple F.F. This running around madly in order to leave has me wondering: what are the five things you simply must have when you are away from home? And why? Any history or goofy things, or stories?

We've been out of town A LOT this summer, and we've got at least two more trips planned. Here are my Five Things:

  1. A couple of books. I don't care where we're going, I'm going to have down time at some point. On vacation, I got to start The Idiot, and a fantabulous little book called To Begin The World Anew, about the American experiment of democracy.
  2. My journal and a bible. Always, always, always. Because inevitably, I'm going to want a chance to process.
  3. Extra underpants. Even if I'm just going somewhere overnight, I'll pack at least 3 extra pair of undies. In fact, I keep about 3 extra pairs of undies and socks in my gym bag. I cannot explain this to you, but I think I learned it from my mom.
  4. Snacks. Usually a peanut butter power bar, because I get really cranky if I have to go too long without meals. This way, I can take care of it, and not bother other people.
  5. This summer, I haven't gone anywhere without a hat. There's just too much skin cancer in my family.

BONUS QUESTION, PLEASE: I'm taking a road trip to Dayton next week, and I'm trying to bring fun music with me. I'd love to have suggestions in the comments. Oh, and to give you a start, so far I have:

  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Georgia Satellites
  • Matchbox 20
  • Indigo Girls
  • B-52s
  • Neil Diamond (who doesn't love Sweet Caroline?)
  • Melissa Etheridge
  • Dolly Parton
  • Dave Matthews

I'll take anything spunky, but you get extra points if it's fun for a tenor to sing along with!

  1. what a great bonus question you thought of! on road trips, we're always wrangling and wondering about what music to bring. My husband has to bring some Segovia. I could see my self singing along to your Dolly Parton! I used to like to bring some musicals along to sing. (My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, etc.)

I also like James Taylor (Carolina On my Mind) for road trips.

  2. I like the two most recent Dixie Chicks CDs for road trip music. Also, Jimmy Buffett. And Terri Hendrix, but you may not have hear of her. She's a hard-working musician who stays out on the road a lot.

(And in response to your comment on my blog, I use this electric toothbrush.)

  3. I had to giggle about the undies, though I have to admit in the days when I was working from more than one clinic I always had changes of everything in the car. And you are so wise to wear a hat...I know I should...sigh. Great music choices, you'll be rockin' on your trip.

Oh yes - extra undies are an absolute necessity! Extra socks are, too. :-)

Now, for road-trip music... I always bring stuff I like to sing. I adore my Kenny Loggins Greatest Hits CD, and the Billy Joel Greatest Hits is another great one. And don't forget children's music - a couple good kid's CDs add some fun and variety, even if everyone on the trip is pretending to be a grown-up. :-)

    Happy road trip!

  5. I always travel with Raffi and Veggie Tales sing along - however, I also travel with a 3 year old. When he falls asleep, I pop in Indigo girls or DC Talk - I guess I don't like to sing along!

  7. Carole King!!!

I agree on the hat and peanut butter power bar. And extra undies couldn't be a bad idea. :)

  8. Your list is refreshingly sensible. Yes! extra panties. And your snack choice is superb.

For road music I suggest Rascall Flatts.

LOVE the Abigail Bartlet reference. Am laughing out loud in my kitchen!

Have you ever heard of Billy Jonas? I'm a big fan of his "Life So Far" CD (check it out at www.billyjonas.com--look at the lyrics for "One," "Coup d'Etat," and "God Is In." You'll be hooked, too. :-) And he's a tenor!

"So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin' ass and celebratin' the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was."
