A Wrestling Wednesday Prayer

Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, ‘Let me go, for the day is breaking.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go, unless you bless me.’ -Genesis 32:24-26, NRSV

I'm jealous of Jacob, on account of the wrestling, the demanding, and the blessing-- all three. This story is so compelling to me right now. There's a prayer in there somewhere, but it's too much, and I don't have the words for it.

But you? Do you have words to pray?

  1. Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the many stories of Your child, Jacob. Give us the opportunity to wrestle with You. Grant us the opportunity to see Your blessings in the world around us. Remind us that even when we go astray, we are always Your children. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

This pray was a whole lot better, but I deleted it by accident.

My usual response to Jacob is, "Thank God he screwed up so badly. If God loved him and chose him, surely God can love me." But jealousy?
Thank you for helping me to see Jacob in a new light this morning!

"So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin' ass and celebratin' the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was."
